This week’s review is on the thrilling Virals book which is written by Kathy Reichs, who was the creator of the suspenseful television series Bones, which is based on her Temperance Brennan series.
Virals is great for young adult readers who are interested in mystery with a hint of science fiction. The main character is fiery and brilliant Tory Brennan whose mother just died in a car crash and was sent to live with her father on Morris Island, in South Carolina. She befriends a group of outcasts like herself while there and for a brief period of time, everything was going smoothly. But like in most mystery books, the good times end and the group unearths skeletal remains of a missing girl, which starts off this exciting case. This is the first book of a fast-paced, five book series.
I could not get enough of this series when I was in middle school and thought that this was essentially perfect writing. Re-reading it today, I would rate this book a four out of five for choppy and rushed writing that could easily be improved and thus overlooked. I will say that her writing vastly improved over the five books. Otherwise I recommend this book to those who enjoy a good crime novel. This is a good transition series for young adult readers who are able to go from young adult reading and will be able to continue to follow some secondary characters in the adult Temperance Brennan novels.
