Sometimes we stumble across a book that makes you fall in love with a genre again, and completely flips the script of that genre. The Hunt Series by Alainna MacPherson was that book for me.
Maeleigh is an adopted, deaf girl who is new to town. Having been homeschooled all her life, high school is a new and exciting challenge for her. But when she hears the handsome Gearden’s voice in her head she discovers that this town isn’t as normal as it appears to be. And to top it off, she’s a large part of this strange society too. Maeleigh is thrust into a world of shifters and druids and learning more secrets everyday. But when someone tries to harm the people that she has come to care about, she realizes that she will do anything to protect her new family.
I love how the main character is deaf. I feel as though MacPherson tapped into so much potential in the paranormal world by showing that everyone is able to shine in the shifter world. Too often we read books in this gnere where the main character is society’s idea of flawless and through that we as readers romanticize the main character. Finding a book where the character has an obstacle within themselves and in how they are able to use that to strengthen them is refreshing. Maeleigh is such a lovely character and one that, by the end of the book, you want to protect with all of your soul. She stands her ground so powerfully in the book while she is dealing with all of these changes in her life and as secrets are being revealed left and right. Gearden is so supportive and kind to her, but I love how he isn’t the typical “alpha male” who wants to shelter his soulmate but rather enable her to protect herself. But let me tell you about Bri, Maeleigh’s best friend. Oh my stars, I love this girl. If the story was just about these two friends I would still be oh-so-happy with this series. Bri not only takes Maeleigh under her wing, SHE LEARNS SIGN LANGUAGE TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR MAELEIGH! We stan supportive and fun best friends like these two!
“She looked down at our hands and tightened hers against the back of my hand, tethering to my wolf in the same instant.”

Additionally the plot is absolutely, positively amazing. I love the progression and the combined worlds of shifter and druid! So often we see just vampires and werewolves and witches with the occassional fae~well welcome Druids! I love the new twists that MacPherson adds to make this story continuously progess without becoming a stale repeat of the shifter stories that we have heard time and time and time again. I can’t wait for more books from Alainna MacPherson and highly recommend following her on instagram (@alainnamacp) for more updates on soon to be relased books!
